Omega-3 fatty acid
Are polyunsaturated (have more than one double bond) fatty acids. They are commonly found in marine oils, seaweed and plankton. Plant oils such as walnut as well as seeds like algal oil and flaxseed oil are another source of Omega 3 fatty acids. The body can not produce Omega-3 on its own, therefor it is important to consume foods or supplements that include them.
Omega-6 fatty acid
Is known to be essential for growth and development, Omega-6 fatty acids are most commonly found in sunflower, grapeseed, vegtable and peanut oil. There should always be a balance between Omega-3 and Omega 6, due to the inflammatory chemicals that can occur when too much of Omega-6 is consumed.
WHY are Omega-3 and Omega-6 included in Infant formula?
Since infants can not get their Omega-3 or Omega-6 from foods they eat in their daily lives like adults, they have to get all their nutrition from either breastmilk or formula. Breastmilk carries properities of these Omega’s from what the mother of the infant consumes. Yet, infants that are fed with formula need to be able to consume them as well. Therefor either Omega-3 or Omega-6 are included separatly or together.
